Meet Gia

Workforce Challenge

Gia holds both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Social Work from the University of Washington. She worked in public child welfare in the State of Washington for 29 years. She moved to Colorado in 2015 and began looking for work in her field, but even with her extensive professional and educational experience, she had a hard time finding employment. Her short-term retirement money was running out, and she had no health benefits.

Workforce Solution

Gia applied for food and medical benefits through Workforce Boulder County (WfBC), and was assigned to Amy, an Employment First Case Manager. Amy helped connect Gia to workshops specifically designed to help older adults re-entering the workforce. Through these workshops, Gia realized she needed to re-tool her resume and hone her interviewing and presentation skills. Gia landed an internship at University of Colorado, working in her area of interest - Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT).

Outcomes & Benefits

Through the internship, Gia was able to develop a more current work history and create professional connections. She started landing interviews, and received several job offers before finding a perfect fit - a flexible, part time job in her field. Gia is preparing to take the Colorado State Licensed Social Worker (LSW) exam. She is engaged in clinical supervision locally, and is part of two therapist network groups. Gia credits WfBC with helping her get back on track professionally.
