Meet Alyssa

Workforce Challenge

In a White House ceremony to award the Medals of Science and Medals of Technology and Innovation, President Obama discussed the importance of a quality science and mathematics education, and underscored the fact that U.S. school aged children are suffering from woeful math and science scores. Alyssa was an economically disadvantaged youth who was selected to participate in WorkNet Pinellas' Summer Career Institute based on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). She was given a scholarship to participate by Solar Source, Inc. a local business.

Workforce Solution

During the program, Alyssa was exposed to many learning opportunities including how to build solar cars. According to Alyssa, "I had heard of electric cars before but I didn't know that solar cars really worked! It was very interesting for me to work with my group and actually create a solar car that used sunlight for power."

Outcomes & Benefits

WorkNet Pinellas' Summer Career Institute helped open the eyes of Alyssa to many types of job opportunities—an excellent example of the workforce investment system helping youth gain access and experience in up and coming fields that will be in high demand.
