Meet Charles

Workforce Challenge

In April, Charles--a dislocated worker who was long-term unemployed--embarked upon a plan to secure his CDLA and work for Swift Trucking. Charles was living in a slide-in camper shell (no truck involved) on a parcel of land about 15 miles from Walsenburg with no water, sewer, electricity or means of transportation. He had chronic diabetes and back pain for which he smoked marijuana. He was referred to Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and enrolled into the WIOA program.

Workforce Solution

On March 5, he was advised of the upcoming Swift Trucking hiring event. As he had always wanted to be a truck driver, he made a commitment to himself to stop smoking marijuana so that he would be able to pass the required drug test when the time came. On March 18, he attended the Swift event and turned in his application. He passed the background and had a clean MVR so they admitted him to the training. He studied every day to prepare himself for the CDL permit test. On April 11, he took the test and passed his CDOT physical with no evidence of diabetes because he had lost so much weight walking to and from town.

Outcomes & Benefits

In a joint effort with Ron Z. of DVR, Charles was able to purchase work clothing, training supplies and the food he would need while attending the three week training in Colorado Springs. On April 18 he began his training, which he completed on May 6. He secured his CDLA and is currently employed and driving over-the-road for Swift Trucking.
