Meet Jacob

Workforce Challenge

Jacob came into the Denver Workforce Center to inquire about Commercial Driver's License (CDL) refresher course after a wrist injury resulted in losing his last welding job. Jacob held a welding and diesel mechanic certification; he obtained a CDL in 2011, but never worked in the field. He had a job offer, but it required him to take the CDL refresher course. Although an Army veteran, Jacob had exhausted his military educational funding and couldn't afford the $2400 cost of the course.

Workforce Solution

Since there is a demand for heavy truck drivers (ONET projections indicate a 25% increase with projected annual job openings of 990), Alison at the Denver Workforce Center worked with Jacob to develop an IEP that included attending a CDL refresher course through US Truck Driving School in late January, obtained an intent to hire letter from May Trucking, and set up the ITA award.

Outcomes & Benefits

After completing his CDL refresher course, Jacob let us know he had started working for May Trucking with a strong starting salary and an opportunity to earn even more after a year of quarterly raises. When we last spoke with Jacob at the end of March, he was calling from New Jersey and still enjoying his work with May.
