Meet Michael

Workforce Challenge

Although Michael had completed a B.S. in Computer Systems, as well as additional software development training (including C++, Visual Basic, Java and Flash), this 40 year old had not been able to secure employment in his field since being laid off in 2008 due to a lack of actual hands-on IT experience.

Workforce Solution

Michael enrolled in the Technology Employment in Colorado Partnership (TEC-P) Program, a program designed to assist dislocated workers in the Technology Industry through skills upgrades, credentialing, and paid on-the-job work experience. TEC-P staff connected Michael to a 3-month paid work experience (PWE) activity with Techtonic Group, a boutique software development house that specializes in B2B application software and maintenance. This was the first time Michael had used his software development skills in a true working environment. Not only was it challenging for him to code in a production environment, he had to learn how to interact within a tech team.

Outcomes & Benefits

Even though this was challenging work for him, the team of experts he was engaged noted Michael's sense of professionalism throughout the PWE. Over the course of the training, Michael's coding skills, attention to deep detail, and team communication skills improved tremendously and at the conclusion of the PWE Michael was retained as a full-time employee.
