Meet GOAL Academy Students

Workforce Challenge

Students at GOAL Academy do not often have the opportunity for field trips or professional speakers at assemblies due to the independent online structure of their coursework. The City of Fort Morgan's Human Resource Director had been invited to speak at a local high school as part of the Governor's Summer Job Hunt and through discussion of resources a hiring event was set up at the Workforce Center. The GOAL Academy students observed the event and inquired about involvement.

Workforce Solution

During the Governor's Summer Job Hunt hiring event for the City of Fort Morgan, the HR Director was able tour the Workforce Center including GOAL Academy. This led to questions about the students and the academic setting. It was determined that the students would benefit from a tour of the water/wastewater treatment plants to help solidify their understanding of the practical application of their studies of math and science to influence daily life in their community. It would also provide incentive for the students to apply for the internships with the City of Fort Morgan as the employees will be retiring in less than 10 years, and replacing staff will be necessary. The students learned that wages were substantial and advancement was possible.

Outcomes & Benefits

The tour provided 3 young men with the opportunity to meet with individuals and do informational interviews with the staff at the water and wastewater treatment plants. The city personnel were able to "see" the caliber of students GOAL Academy has attending their organization. The students were able to walk through the water treatment areas and realize the importance of their studies in the core subjects and how the lessons impact and are utilized in basic employment duties.
