Meet Tenae

Workforce Challenge

As a 16-year-old, Tenae is a single mom who also cares for her disabled parents and younger, autistic sister. She was was referred to the CalWORKs Youth Employment Program (CYEP) for support.

Workforce Solution

Through the program, Tenae received customer service training and was then, placed in a paid work experience with Wal-Mart (funded by the Workforce Development Board). Additionally, she attended workshops that helped to develop confidence and leadership skills in a group setting. After working at Wal-Mart, Tenae worked at the Goodwill Career Resource Center, becoming the “go-to” person for resume assistance. She was able to earn money, and learn the necessary skills to find gainful employment.

Outcomes & Benefits

Tenae is currently training to become a certified nursing assistant, which leads her one step closer to her dream job as a neo-natal nurse. She says, “It was hard having a baby and not knowing how I was going to provide for my son. Goodwill helped me with a plan. I knew I needed to find a way, and I am very grateful that I received so much support.”
