Meet Gabriela

Workforce Challenge

After 15 years of working for a car rental company, veteran Gabriela, a single mother of three, was laid off. She applied for and received unemployment insurance benefits, but after months of unsuccessful job searches, her benefits expired. She reluctantly applied for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program (TANF) at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services (DPSS). She also enrolled in the Transitional Subsidized Employment Program (TSE) with the South Bay Workforce Investment Board, where she was referred to the United States Veterans (U.S. Vets) Initiative of Los Angeles.

Workforce Solution

The South Bay Workforce Investment Board’s (SBWIB) Transitional Subsidized Employment Program (TSE) has been consistently utilized by the U.S. Vets Initiative, which provides homeless and at-risk veterans and their families with valuable on-the-job training and other services. Through staff support and workshop attendance, Gabriela improved her interview skills and slowly, her confidence and employment options increased.

Outcomes & Benefits

Motivated by the support of staff, Gabriela took advantage of the services provided and was soon hired full-time as a Program Assistant.
