Meet Kasey

Workforce Challenge

Kasey hopes to attend culinary school at Western Colorado Community College, which partners with Colorado Mesa University to ensure a well-rounded college experience and environment. Kasey’s interest was developed at home with her mom as her mentor and support. Her future holds the dream of owning and operating a restaurant. The Family and Consumer Sciences education at Fort Morgan High School offers 5 different career cluster areas fulfilling the CORE skills that are needed to be their own Life Manager. Kasey is currently a Catering/Culinary student. She has completed the coursework, but wanted more experience in the culinary field.

Workforce Solution

The Fort Morgan Workforce Center has been doing community outreach for the spring semester with the Morgan County high schools through a program called Toolbox Treats and Topics. This program is supported by the school counselors to help reach ICAP requirements. Each week of the six-week series, two community members are invited to speak to local high school students regarding their pathway to careers. Each week, a delicious sweet or savory delicacy magically appears in the classroom just before the start of the presentation. Fort Morgan High School senior, Kasey, was asked by her instructor Angela to create the “treat of the day” for the students in the Toolbox Treats and Topics attendance. Kasey and her fellow students are being introduced to the services the Fort Morgan Workforce Center provides in resume building, interview tips, career research and training programs by sponsoring programs that meet needs of the ICAP requirements. This experience will give the generation entering the workforce a better understanding of the mission and resources Workforce Centers provide.

Outcomes & Benefits

Through this experience, Kasey has been given an opportunity to plan, organize and deliver product using the lessons and training provided through the Mustang Catering Program at Fort Morgan High School. The Fort Morgan Workforce Center realizes the importance of investing in experiences that build student confidence and promote the education they are receiving in their course studies that will enable them to succeed in the future. Through this opportunity, many goals are being achieved and relationships are being built.
