Meet Chris

Workforce Challenge

As a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, Chris was on deployment in Afghanistan when she met her husband who was about to retire from the U.S. Air Force. After her husband retired, they moved to Onaway, MI where Chris was unable to find full-time employment. After she was laid off from a low-paying, seasonal job, she visited Michigan Works! to pursue a career as a full-time Corrections Officer.

Workforce Solution

Chris worked with her Talent Specialist Yolanda to create a resume and cover letter, complete the State of Michigan Correctional Officer application, participate in mock interviews and attend a dress for success workshop. Once chosen for training, Yolanda helped Chris set-up an ITA (Individual Training Account) and support services to attend Lake Superior State University School of Criminal Justice.

Outcomes & Benefits

Chris completed the program and was hired full-time by the State of Michigan Department of Corrections Kinross Correctional Facility, working as a Corrections Officer at Chippewa Correctional Facility. She states, "I can't express how much I appreciate Yolanda’s help! Thank you for all your time and effort with me, for my schooling and progress for my new career!”
