Meet Sherrie

Workforce Challenge

As a single mother caring for her autistic six-year-old son and sick elderly mother, Sherrie moved from Nevada to California to receive help from her other family members while she went back to school. Once in California, she enrolled in the licensed vocational nurse program at the American Career College and applied for financial aid. She was awarded a grant and received a student loan to cover any additional costs. However, Sherrie still needed some assistance with transportation and the purchase of uniforms. A friend referred her to the America's Job Centers of California for additional help.

Workforce Solution

The center offered her financial assistance for transportation and supplies. In addition, the Workforce Investment Board’s centers assisted Sherrie with resume writing, interviewing and job searching.

Outcomes & Benefits

Sherrie was successful in passing her exams, and she is now a licensed vocational nurse. She secured employment in the field of medicine as a ward clerk/certified nursing assistant, which she hopes will be a successful career. She said that the support she received has been integral to her becoming self-sufficient and achieving success.
