Meet Mickel

Workforce Challenge

After being incarcerated for three years, Mickel was released and decided to start a new life. He had interest in becoming a firefighter, but he did not know where to start. The probation department informed Mickel of job assistance services offered by the Workforce Investment Board.

Workforce Solution

At the America's Job Centers of California, Mickel enrolled in firefighting classes. He was also taught how to explain his conviction during interviews and put together a resume, highlighting relevant strengths and skills.

Outcomes & Benefits

Mickel successfully completed the classes and found a job as a firefighter. He says, "I learned a lot of information that helped me realize I could change and find a job. He is grateful for the opportunity to turn his life around, as well as the motivation and support he received from the Workforce Investment Board’s staff.
