A New Road

Workforce Challenge

"Cathy"* was a single mother of three who had been on welfare as a child, and was now supporting her family through the social services system. She wanted to find a career that would contribute to her household and provide a means to get off assistance.

Workforce Solution

Through the Blanding Workforce Services office, Cathy was approved for WIA funding to enter the Commercial Driving and Heavy Equipment Program at the College of Eastern Utah in Blanding. The program would give her the education she needed to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). Her goal was to work for a local government entity.

Outcomes & Benefits

Cathy completed her program, obtained her license and was hired as an equipment operator at the County landfill, meeting her goal of being hired by local government. Unfortunately, the position did not last long, but she was quickly re-hired by a local sanitation contractor. She is on her way to earning a living wage and is contributing to her own future now.
