Meet Jahaira

Workforce Challenge

Jaharia, an 18-year-old member of a low-income family, desired a career in Dental Assisting. After doing her research, she found that financial aid does not cover this certificate program which costs more than $3,000. She was months away from obtaining her high school diploma and clueless as to how she would be able to continue her education without financial aid.

Workforce Solution

Jahaira met with an ESWC youth case manager to she if she was eligible for services in the WIA program. Once she was enrolled in February 2015, ESWC enrolled her into the Dental Assisting course at Academy of Dental Assisting and assisted with tuition costs.

Outcomes & Benefits

Jahaira obtained her Dental Assisting certificate one week prior to her high school graduation. She was then placed at Adventure Dental and Vision for a 500 hour work experience, which carried her from WIA to WIOA. She also completed a one day Nitrous Oxide course which assisted her in gaining full-time employment. By the time many of her classmates were getting ready for their first semester of college, Jahaira was in a Career Pathway of her choice.
