Workforce Challenge

James Davis came into our program in July, 2008. He had a limited work history, a criminal history and no driver’s license. He was finding it difficult to secure a job. “I felt hopeless. I had recently applied for a job and had the owner yell at me “There’s no work!'" said James. "I needed help. I’m dyslexic and have ADHD. I found out about your program from a friend who was successful.”

Workforce Solution

James worked closely with his counselor, attended several workshops and was successful in getting his driver’s license reinstated. In 2009, he was placed on a paid internship as an auto mechanic to get current work experience. He completed that but found that it was not a career path that would work for him. He did the necessary research and was approved for vocational training as a Welder. "Just going into the office made me feel successful. Attending workshops like Understanding Employer Expectations made me re-think what I was hearing about the recession and there being no jobs out there. I got training and a job.”

Outcomes & Benefits

James completed his welding training in July 2010. In December, he obtained employment through our On the Job Training program making $12/hour designing furniture. James said, "I actually have hope now. I have a job that will turn into a career. I have been given a level of self worth that can’t be measured. I tell people about your program all the time. If it weren’t for your program and the people who work there that care I wouldn’t be where I am today. I needed a hand up not a hand out and they found the right place for me."
