Meet Matthew

Workforce Challenge

Matthew was an 18-year-old individual who had an impressive employment history. However, he lacked one thing: a high school diploma. His estimated graduation date was May 2016. However, it left him no room to fail a class as he was already short credits. Matthew desired both work and education, and he knew that committing to 35+ hours of school and 40 hours of work was not realistic, so he chose to drop out of high school.

Workforce Solution

Matthew discovered and enrolled in the WIOA program in August 2015. He used the Employment Services of Weld County's Assessment and Learning lab to study for his G.E.D test.

Outcomes & Benefits

After 2 1/2 months of studying, Matthew obtained his G.E.D in October 2015--seven months sooner then he would have received his high school diploma had he not dropped out. Matthew applied and began service as an AmeriCorps member with the Weld County Youth Conservation Corps (WCYCC) program. Matthew plans to continue his education, beginning in January at Aims. He will utilize the $1,175 Education Award he will earn with AmeriCorps to pursue an Automotive Technician Certificate.
