Meet Tammy

Workforce Challenge

Pregnant and with a another toddler at home, Tammy enrolled in the Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) program, but she was anxious about her chances of being successful. Balancing school with the responsibilities of being a parent was difficult, and she was stressed and tired. However, she decided to participate in Access to Careers, Education and Support (ACES) program. hoping that the two programs would propel her forward.

Workforce Solution

Throughout the year, Tammy grew as a leader as she attended many of the leadership group sessions. She also heard guest speakers talk about the importance of college and finding a career that you love. With this in mind, she developed goals for her career and future. Determined to achieve her GED, Tammy focused on improving her skills and attended ACES classes throughout the year. At ACES, she was instrumental in planning a family reunion. She also had the opportunity to attend the Jobs for Michigan's Graduates Career Development Conference in Lansing. At the conference, she competed against other students at interviewing, creative problem-solving and math competency. Her team received first place for their commercial!

Outcomes & Benefits

With the program assistance provided, Tammy achieved her GED despite having her baby mid-school year. She received the guidance and support needed to help her persevere and continue to make positive choices. She is now attending Alpena Community College to study Criminal Justice. Tammy has two jobs and continues to receive mentoring support and help with transportation.
