Meet Melovy

Workforce Challenge

Melovy lives in a household with her mother & younger sister. Her family has had financial challenges. Although her mother has had some low wage jobs, she has not had permanent employment and receives TANF & food stamps. Melovy entered WIA as a high school senior and had a few months experience at a fast food restaurant. She wanted to major in journalism but felt she wouldn’t have enough money. She also lacked skills to search for work that would help with her career goal and also bring in income.

Workforce Solution

Melovy attended job readiness training, financial literacy & career exploration through the Youth Employment Academy. Upon completion, YEA’s job developer found a work experience for her at Urban Spectrum, a local Denver monthly magazine. Melovy began working with this employer and was given an extension of her work experience hours to learn even more journalism skills. In addition, YEA assisted her with completing FAFSA, applying for scholarships & working with her school counselors on managing college costs. Through her school and the CA’s assistance, she was approved to be in the Ascent program & accepted to Metro State University. She can acquire 30 credit hours for the 2015-2016 at no cost & will have her high school diploma deferred til May.

Outcomes & Benefits

Upon completion of her work experience, she was hired on at Urban Spectrum as production assistant. She is eligible for Pell Grants & will be applying for other scholarships with her CA’s assistance & continuing on as a sophomore. Melovy states that the work experience that she receives is exactly what she is covering in her journalism classes, and she feels that she is already steps ahead of some of her peers. In addition, the extra income is helping her to support her family.
