Workforce Challenge

A 40-year-old chocolate confectioner, GKI Foods LLC (GKI) makes all kinds of products from chocolate, including covered raisins and malt balls, peanut butter cups, pecan caramel patties and much more. They have grown from the small, husband and wife granola company, and they are still growing today. Recently, GKI expanded one of their two buildings to add production lines and warehouse space. To remain competitive, they wanted to train employees in best practices.

Workforce Solution

The Skilled Trades Training Funds allowed GKI to enroll 24 of their 82 employees in 5S training provided by MMTC. Two of the 24 trained were Warehouse Manager John and Warehouse Team Member Rob. John and Rob then taught the 5S Principles to Randy and James. Warehouse staff wanted to use the newly obtained 5S knowledge to give the warehouse a makeover.

Outcomes & Benefits

Together, they turned the 40,000 sq. ft. warehouse space into a 5S masterpiece. Each square foot is designated to a particular product. Pictures accompany the product identifying its location and how to take and replace the product. This newly implemented system will help the warehouse be more productive overall.
