Meet Doug

Workforce Challenge

Doug came into the Rifle Workforce Center through a college referral. He wished to complete the new Sustainability Studies program, but was not eligible for any funding through other resources. Doug had worked in the service industry, but had been in an accident and suffered a traumatic brain injury, so he had taken some time off to heal. He completed classes in solar and CAD but wished to have a degree. He had college credits so this Bachelor’s degree would only take a couple of more years.

Workforce Solution

Doug was found to be eligible for the Workforce Investment Act program and enrolled in the fall of 2012. The WIA program helped to fund some classes, and Doug also funded some on his own. He was also co-enrolled into the Voc-Rehab program, which helped him with additional assistance. Doug successfully completed his training program and received his degree in Sustainable Studies. He was job hunting for quite a while as he was only working in a part-time job which was not in his field. He stated that while jobs in the area were in short supply, he was not averse to relocating for work and was looking in other states, including Florida, where family is located.

Outcomes & Benefits

Doug moved to Florida to be closer to family and continued to look for work. He was hired by ProBuild as a Component Tech/Truss Designer. The company maintains sustainable practices and works well with the degree that Doug worked so hard to earn. He is earning a good salary, likes the company, and is happy. The company will assist him in his career advancement. He expressed deep appreciation to his career coaches who assisted in his endeavors and made his future much brighter.
