Meet Barry

Workforce Challenge

Barry was an unemployed veteran who recently moved to Colorado. He was a homemaker caring for his three children for six years. When faced with the reality of having to return to work to make ends meet, he encountered not being marketable with his skills. He was let go from his UPS position as a driver due to not having a CDLA.

Workforce Solution

In order to return to the workforce after many years of not working and earning stable wages in an entry level job, he needed to obtain a CDLA. Becoming a truck driver would enable him to contribute to his wife's income to get out of debt and provide financial stability for his family. Between the collaboration of the VWIP and WIA programs, Barry was able to receive the funding needed for training to obtain his CDLA. Barry also received assistance from Community Enrichment program through Wagner Peyser services to assist with rent and gas until he received his first paycheck.

Outcomes & Benefits

Barry graduated, received his CDLA and obtained local employment with American Furniture Warehouse. Barry is now happily employed thanks to the collaboration in services he received. Barry cannot thank the Workforce Center enough for making this dream come true for him. Based on his financial situation when he first arrived at the workforce center, this possibility wouldn't have been possible for him and his family.
