Meet Sable

Workforce Challenge

Sable is a bright and high-spirited high school graduate, who had trouble with basic mathematics and literacy. She had very little work experience and so had a hard time finding even part-time employment. Sable was determined to complete an occupational skills program at the local community college in order to increase her chances of gaining meaningful employment in manufacturing.

Workforce Solution

WIA sponorship has provided financial support by way of tuition, books, fees and insurance for Sable to enter the JobsNow Welding program at Central Carolina Community College. The program also provided supportive services in the form of travel reimbursement for traveling to and from classes each week, safety equipment for the welding program, tutoring and academic support to help Sable increase her Effective Functional Level in Mathematics, Reading and Language and sponsorship in the Human Resource Development Career Readiness Pathways course. Through leadership development opportunities, she was able to demonstrate responsibility to self and her community.

Outcomes & Benefits

Sable received services through the job development program at the local One-Stop, Community College and with Lee County Youth and Family services. She has earned a Bronze Career Readiness Certificate and has been able to gain and retain unsubsidized employment for 10 months. Sable successfully completed her occupational skills goal on December 15, 2010 by completing 300 classroom hours towards her Welding Certification. Sable is more prepared to continues with her job search in manufacturing.
