Workforce Challenge

Shannan always wanted to earn a degree in nursing, but as a single mother of three, she was forced to delay this goal. Always trying to support her family, but unable to find permanent employment, Shannan moved from job to job and sought work with temp services. After several years of this, she was laid off and began to receive unemployment. Shannan visited Michigan Works!, where she had previously participated in the Work First program in 2003, to receive career counseling. She knew she needed help before her unemployment benefits expired.

Workforce Solution

Shannan first attended the ‘How Michigan Works! Works for You’ orientation. She followed this by verifying her Silver Level ACT WorkKeys certification and then, attended the Effective Resume Writing Workshop. Through Michigan Works!, she learned about Certified Health Aide (CNA) classes, which were starting soon at Mott Community College. Through a scholarship, she attended classes on top of balancing the busy schedules of her kids.

Outcomes & Benefits

At the end of training, she was awarded her Certificate of Completion. She interviewed with Trilogy Health Services at The Willows and was offered a position, pending her license. She accepted the position and received her license soon after.
