Meet Vanessa

Workforce Challenge

Vanessa did very well academically, but living with her grandparents in the country without transportation made it difficult for her to participate in extracurricular activities. When she was a junior in high school, she was enrolled in the Michigan Works! WIA Youth program.

Workforce Solution

Through the program, Vanessa was able to get a driver license as well as financial assistance with auto repairs, insurance, clothing and mileage. After competing her junior year, she was able to participate in a work experience with Michigan State University's Extension Office. There, she performed general administrative duties, demonstrating her willingness to learn and grow. Her supervisor was impressed with her skills and appreciated her mature attitude.

During her senior year, she continued to excel academically, and she even reigned as Homecoming Queen. Since some of her classes were not available, she took several online and dual-enrolled at the local college. She was quickly becoming a confident, capable young woman.

Outcomes & Benefits

Encouraged by her Case Manager Barb, Vanessa explored college options. She enrolled in the local community college and using her TIP and Pell Grant, she later transferred to M-TEC to become a certified emergency Nurse (CENA). She passed the certification and is seeking CENA employment. Someday, she hopes to return to college to pursue an associates degree.
