Meet Laura

Workforce Challenge

Laura enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom, but even with her husband working full-time, they were barely making ends meet. She decided to reach for a dream she had since she was a child. She wanted to become a nurse. She enrolled in college, taking the necessary classes to be accepted in the Nursing Program.

As she had imagined, going back to school on a limited income wasn’t easy. There were classes, travel to and from school, daycare and a million other school-related expenses that were consuming their income at an alarming rate. They were grateful for Food Stamp Assistance, but they were still in need of other financial assistance. This is when Laura visited Michigan Works!

Workforce Solution

Thankfully, Lisa was eligible for financial assistance with childcare, mileage, licensing and other needs. She worked with Staff Jenna and together, they devised a plan to best support her training.

Outcomes & Benefits

She graduated from Kirtland Community College and successfully passed her State of Michigan Board Licensing to become a Registered Nurse. She found employment with MediLodge of Hillman and saw her childhood dream come to fruition. She says, “Michigan Works! helped me achieved my dream of becoming a Nurse. Without them it would have been extremely hard to achieve.”
