Meet Vanessa

Workforce Challenge

Vanessa Washington of Greenville participated in the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) and worked at the Mississippi State University Agriculture Research Center at Stoneville to help earn money to pay for college. She was chosen to represent Delta State University in a documentary produced by Jan Vaughn, WIA Coordinator for WWISCAA. Jan said, “I was impressed with Vanessa's attitude. She was not in an ideal job, as she was working all day in the field with soybeans to see if they developed stem cancer, yet she never complained." Vaughn continued, “Vanessa is a Speech and Hearing Major at Delta, so being involved in scientific research was not in her comfort zone. However, Vanessa’s supervisor, Dr.Gave Scilumbato, Plant Pathologist, said, ”Vanessa is a quick learner, a good worker, and I would hate to lose her. I hope this Summer Youth Employment Program will continue next year.”

Workforce Solution

Vanessa is the upcoming President of the African-American Students at Delta State University. Now entering her junior year, Vanessa has accumulated $15,000 in student loans. To assist Vanessa in continuing her education, the SYEP staff helped her apply for an Individual Training Account (ITA) that will provide tuition for her final 4 semesters.

Outcomes & Benefits

Vanessa is the first member of her family to attend college. She will become the first one to receive a degree. Vanessa commented, “The Summer Youth Employment Program has truly had a positive impact on my life. One thing I've learned is that a person can do anything they put their mind into. I've learned that hard work and commitment are qualities needed to have success on the job. This has really been a great experience for me and I am so blessed and thankful for the wonderful opportunities that I've gained."
