Meet Alfred

Workforce Challenge

Alfred and I met through the Parent Program operating under the Adams County Workforce & Business Center. His legal technician in the Adams County Child Support program referred him on April 22, 2015. His challenges were to find work, pay his child support, learn the remodeling/construction industry through on-the-job training or in college, and, if possible, find apprenticeship opportunities.

Workforce Solution

We agreed that the primary focus would be to apply for work as a maintenance tech for building properties. This would enable him to apply his current construction and remodeling skills on the job, possibly attain free housing, pursue higher education at night, and pay his child support. My task would be to locate educational/apprenticeship resources, help him develop his resume, teach him how to do effective job searches using Connecting Colorado/websites and temporary agencies. I contacted a resource in the construction industry to find out what college is the best for learning the industry and if he knew about any apprenticeship opportunities. My resource was enthusiastic about sharing information and Alfred followed up on the leads.

Outcomes & Benefits

Initially, Alfred succeeded in securing work with an owner of an apartment complex doing maintenance. The salary was low, but he accepted it because it would assist him paying his child support. Meanwhile, he continued looking for something better with more money and found it. As of June 1st he started working as a temporary employee for a property management group earning $14.00 an hour. Alfred has done so well that the company offered him permanent employment with a sizable salary increase. He knows the best school to attend for construction/remodeling, is going to soon be moving to his own apartment and and will be paying his child support on time.
