Meet Martin

Workforce Challenge

After being released from Platte Valley Youth Services Center (PVYSC), a youth correctional facility, Martin was transitioned to work release. While in the work release facility, it is mandated to obtain employment to pay for room and board. Martin did not have a high school diploma and with a criminal background he quickly realized that finding employment would not be easy.

Workforce Solution

Employment Services of Weld County (ESWC) Youth Case Managers Leslie and Karina first met Martin at PVYSC during a workshop they presented to detained youth. When he transitioned to work release, he remembered the ESWC presentation and visited the office to see if he could qualify for the Workforce Investment Act Youth Program. Leslie met with and assessed Martin's situation the same day and set a primary goal to obtain his GED and secondly to obtain employment related services.

Outcomes & Benefits

Martin was enrolled into the youth program the same day he walked into ESWC. His TABE scores and GED pre-testing showed that he did not need any preparation. He obtained his GED in just two days and was referred to the Weld County Youth Conservation Corps for employment. He applied and interviewed for an AmeriCorps summer position and subsequently obtained employment just one week after his enrollment into the youth program!
