Meet Kendric

Workforce Challenge

Kendric came to the BUILDING SHIPBUILDERS Program when he was 18 years old. He had just graduated from high school with an Occupational Diploma and was working in the cafeteria of the local hospital. Although he had a job, he knew that without a better education, he would always have difficulty finding gainful employment.

Workforce Solution

Kendric worked hard and successfully completed the requirements of our Pre-employment training class which focuses on shipyard specific skills and terminology as well as basic employability skills. He was hired by Northrop Grumman Shipbuilders in October of 2009 as a shipfitter with the 9th class of the BUILDING SHIPBUILDERS Program. While at work on the shipyard 2 hours of his 10 hour work day was spent in class to study for his GED.

Outcomes & Benefits

Kendric continues to work for Northrop Grumman Shipbuilders. He now is a 2nd Class Painter/Blaster. Because of Kendric's positive attitude and quiet demeanor, his superiors value him as an employee. He also continues his studies, working towards attaining his GED. Just recently, his diligent studies have resulted in an increase of 7 grade levels across the board. With his positive work ethic and attitude, he looks forward to a long, prosperous career in shipbuilding.
