Workforce Challenge

As a young adult Willie needed to create a stronger career path where he could grow with his skills, obtain experience and be self-sufficient. He felt he was already at a disadvantage working in fast food where his income could not support the necessities of self-sufficiency. He enjoyed welding in H.S. at the Donaldson Career Center in Greenville and felt transitioning to a career as a professional welder would be a great opportunity.

Workforce Solution

Willie began taking an advanced welding class at ARC Labs, Inc. through the WIA program. After his training at ARC Labs, each day he worked 4 hours in the afternoon at his fast food job, and then worked an overnight shift from 4:30pm to 6:30am at an all-night restaurant, where he was assured a meal also. The hours and commitment were rough but he knew he needed a better income for his future stability.

Outcomes & Benefits

Willie completed his training and received NCCER Welding Certification, OSHA Occupational Safety & Health Administration and Construction Safety, and WorkKeys® certifications, and since then he hasn’t looked back! He had a wonderful experience at his first job, learning more than he ever anticipating and receiving his first pay check for $1000 for one week. His second job also lasted a week, and his pay was $3200.00! He was so relieved to pay his late rent and bills. Willie has been working for a while now, and has traveled throughout the United States. He has a career path plan and is confident about his future!
