Meet Therisa

Workforce Challenge

Therisa dropped out of school when she was in the 10th grade. For four years, she worked at different restaurants and fast food establishments trying to support herself. She finally realized that without an education, this was the only life she would ever know, with little hope for a brighter future.

Workforce Solution

With the support of her aunt, Therisa came to the CARES of Mississippi, BUILDING SHIPBUILDERS PROGRAM. Therisa attended class, studied hard, and attained her GED. She also participated in classes at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College provided by WIA funding through CARES of Mississippi. She completed the Medical Billing and Coding program and earned vocational certification, but more importantly, she discovered an interest in the medical field.

Outcomes & Benefits

Therisa has applied for admission to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. She plans to go into the military once she completes the required 15 college hours. She would like to pursue a career in the medical field while in the military with the long term goal of transitioning into the civilian medical field once her military career is completed. She now feels that the bright future that once seemed to be beyond her grasp is now firmly within her reach.
