Meet Brian

Workforce Challenge

Unemployed and living on his savings for the past 6 months, Brian visited the Edwards Workforce Center. He had been laid off from his job in HVAC. Although he had been looking for work, he was unable to find a job with a sustainable wage. Brian contacted American Gypsum about an available position. He had some transferrable skills from past work experience, but he did not have all skills necessary for the plant job.

Workforce Solution

Due to an existing partnership between the workforce center and the employer, management contacted the workforce center to discuss an on-the-job training program for Brian. Workforce staff determined that Brian was eligible for the WIA program, and they developed a training plan. Brian was trained as a Maintenance Mechanic in cooperation with the gypsum plant.

Outcomes & Benefits

Brian used his transferrable skills and the training program to successfully learn the new requirements for the position. Upon completed of the WIA program, he was hired as a full-time Maintenance Mechanic. Plant management is very satisfied with Brian’s work ethic and their partnership in place with the workforce center.
