Workforce Challenge

Aurel was laid off from her job of over six years and like so many people who have been laid off, she faced several uncertainties and had numerous questions. She wondered if she could live off UIB while looking for a job. She wondered if she would find a job with the skills she possessed. She wondered if she should go back to school to better her situation.

Workforce Solution

After further research and consideration, Aurel decided it would be best to go back to school. She utilized the Thomasville JobLink to research career options and find out about training scholarship opportunities. After evaluating various training and career paths, Aurel and her WIA counselor determined that Histotechnology, an allied health program at Davidson County Community College, was a good fit for her.

While in school she worked hard to achieve academic success. She was a model student who served as a Student Ambassador and was inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society. She was a dedicated student, and it resulted in a 4.0 GPA upon graduation.

Outcomes & Benefits

After she started her job search, Aurel began to realize that jobs were available in her field, but not in the Triad area. She did not let this discourage her. Instead, she expanded her search area and in a short span of time had two job offers. She now works with Duke University Health Systems. Since starting work, she has obtained her HT certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathology and reports that after being on the job over four months she really loves what she does and learns more everyday.
