Meet Rafael

Workforce Challenge

Rafael has two felonies, and he is currently on probation. He was having difficulty finding employment, including entry-level labor positions.

Workforce Solution

A family member informed Rafael about Workforce Investment Board services and recommended that he look into training possibilities. Rafael informed his advisor at the WIB’s America’s Job Center of California that he would like to be trained as a commercial truck driver. Normally, his felonies and probation status would prevent him from being employed in this field. However, Rafael was fortunate enough to receive a hire letter from a company that was willing to give him an opportunity once he attained his class A license. Rafael was approved for commercial truck driving training through Roadmaster Drivers School.

Outcomes & Benefits

Rafael successfully completed his training and passed his Class A drivers test at the DMV. He is now employed at Wallace Concrete, Inc. Rafael told his advisor that he is very grateful for the opportunity to attend training and to be starting in, not just a job, but a good career with a promising future.
