Meet Javier

Workforce Challenge

After working for a local aircraft company as a sheet metal assembler for eleven years, Javier was laid off. He was seeking a more secure industry that didn't include the possibility of future layoffs. He also needed to find steady employment that was comparable to his current wages in order to provide for his family.

Workforce Solution

Javier visited the Wichita Workforce Center and enrolled in the TAA program. He was able to take advantage of the training benefit, which covered the total cost of tuition, books and supplies. He applied and was accepted into a respiratory program. The program was not a good fit. He then applied and was accepted into an occupational therapy program. This program was a much better fit. Although the course work and internships were challenging at times, he worked hard and excelled in his studies. He also built strong relationships with his classmates and professors.

Outcomes & Benefits

Javier successfully completed the training program and passed the state boards. He has secured employment on an on-call basis. However, he is still seeking full-time employment. He is also earning more per hour than he was in his previous position. Javier expressed his gratitude, saying "Thanks for everything you do."
