Meet Laura

Workforce Challenge

Laura was a veteran, and her part-time job ended. Previously, she was placed in the VA Supportive Housing Program. Laura had enough funds to pay immediate rent, but she would soon be delinquent. She was also in a drug and rehab program, and while there, she she served as a Rec Assistant and managed the Computer Lab. To keep her apartment and support herself, Laura needed help finding a new position. At this point in her life, she wanted to invest in a career, not just another job.

Workforce Solution

With great computer, inside sales and customer service skills, Laura had excelled in work-from-home customer contact and sales with her former company. The local DVOP (Disabled Veteran Outreach program) coordinator helped Laura search for jobs. A production associate position with Discover Goodwill was found. The DVOP escorted Laura to the Workforce Center Career Center and helped her apply online. He also helped Laura update her resume. Finally, the DVOP contacted the Discover Goodwill recruiter on Laura’s behalf.

Outcomes & Benefits

Laura was hired by Discover Goodwill. Realizing she had a large amount of college credits, possibly enough for an Associate’s Degree, the DVOP helped Laura obtain approval for a grant to study at Pikes Peak Community College. Laura plans to work during the day and attend classes in the evening so that she can earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Business.
