Meet Phil

Workforce Challenge

Phil is a single father with a young son. Before coming to Workforce Boulder County (WBC), he worked in the oil and gas industry. His alternating, 14-day on/off schedule meant that he was frequently away from home.

Workforce Solution

Phil enrolled in Boulder County's Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program, which is a 5-year academic, employment and savings incentive program. It is designed to help low-income single parents and families gain education and career skills to improve their financial situation and move toward self-sufficiency. Phil's manager referred him to WBC's Internship Program, where he found placement with the county's Fleet Services Division. Phil's background as a parts specialist in the U.S. Army (HHC 1st BN, 6th INF) made him a good fit for fleet services work.

Outcomes & Benefits

Phil's internship manager recognized him as a Boulder County Shining Star. "Phil is such a pleasant fellow to work with and always has a smile," he remarked. "He shows up to work every day well before his scheduled shift begins, and is a very hard worker."

Phil is now a permanent Fleet Services employee, and will soon graduate from the FSS Program. He credits his success to WBC saying, "Their dedication and attention to detail will help you reach your goals, no doubt!"
