Meet Lesley

Workforce Challenge

Lesley came to the Pikes Peak Workforce Center’s Youth Zone seeking assistance with tuition for the Medical Assistant program. She was already awarded financial aid (FAFSA), but she still needed about $7,000 to pay tuition and avoid student loan debt. As a teen mom, Lesley struggled with balancing her roles as a student and parent. Additionally, she did not have a computer at home, which caused her to be away from her son a lot.

Workforce Solution

Through the WIA program, Lesley qualified for tuition assistance. She also qualified for the Youth Zone’s I.T. Academy, which teaches basic computer skills and allows young adults to explore careers in the IT industry. At the end of Academy, successful participants are rewarded with a new laptop printer. Lesley’s good performance in school was supported with incentives that provided interview clothes needed when she was looking for an internship. Lesley's preparedness to excel impressed her case manager and her accomplishments were celebrated enthusiastically by the Youth Team.

Outcomes & Benefits

Lesley finished her Medical Assistant training on time and with almost the highest grade possible. She was awarded multiple times for perfect attendance and received glowing letters of recommendation. She completed her internship with no trouble and passed her state licensure test on the first try. Within two weeks of getting her license, she got a fantastic job at the local community health center! Lesley said “I have no words to describe how thankful I am for [the Youth Zone].”
