Meet Steven

Workforce Challenge

Steven had little work experience, but he couldn't afford training. Unable to find a job, he felt trapped, frustrated and confused. His desire was to either work with his hands or teach kids how to play sports. He saw a Workforce Investment Board flyer about free training, and he was excited to find out more.

Workforce Solution

Steven signed up to take the work readiness training at the WIB-funded Provisional Education Services Center. Through this class, he learned how to strategically fill out applications, answer interview questions and present a great resume. Steven also took a construction vocational training course, which certified him in four areas of the construction trade and provided an 8-week work experience. With a downturn in the economy, construction jobs were scarce. To secure employment, Steven received assistance applying for a YMCA position working with kids.

Outcomes & Benefits

His excellent interview skills helped him secure a part-time position working as a summer camp aide. He has since been promoted to full-time site leader and received a pay raise. Steven said, “I had a lot of mentors that really cared about me, and helped me in many ways to get a job and be a better person. Thank you.”
