Watchmen Patrol

Workforce Challenge

Owner Anthony Wiggins was thrilled when he won new clients for his three-year-old security business, Watchmen Patrol, which supplies unarmed guards for schools and construction zones. Wiggins quickly realized he needed to add at least 10 new employees to staff of eight in order to meet the needs of these new customers.

Workforce Solution

Initially, Wiggins was seeking help by placing job ads for security guards but then he learned about the WIB’s On-the-Job-Training program. Wiggins worked with WIB staff to specify exactly what he was looking for in an employee. The prescreened candidates from the WIB were much higher quality than he had been seeing from recruitment efforts at a local community college, he said.

Outcomes & Benefits

He hired six new staff through the On-the-Job-Training program, in which the WIB reimbursed 50% of the employee salaries for the first three months of employment. “It sounds too good to be true," said Wiggins, adding that he is committed to spreading the word about the WIB’s programs to other small business owners. “It’s a great program everyone should know about."
