Meet Andre

Workforce Challenge

Andre was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome at an early age and was enrolled in Special Education classes throughout his schooling. Because of his condition, he struggled with the social interpersonal skills needed during job interviews such as eye contact and demonstrating self esteem.

Workforce Solution

Andre came to the Inglewood OneStop Center and was enrolled in the Summer Youth Program. Prior to being placed at a work site, he participated in week-long 'Blueprint for Workplace Success' course and quickly improved his interviewing skills. "I was really nervous speaking in front of the class, but that practice helped me in overcoming my shyness," he related. Andre was placed in a subsidized work assignment at Inglewood High School where he performed clerical and maintenance duties.

Outcomes & Benefits

At the successful conclusion of his assignment, Andre continued attending Job Club at the One-Stop and received resume assistance. He conducted 1-on-1 mock interviews to improve his interpersonal skills. With his new found confidence, Andre interviewed for a position with Ralphs in Marina del Rey, passed his 90-day probationary period and now works 30 hours a week making more than minimum wage. He has been placed in the stocking & warehouse section which is an area assigned only to the most reliable employees who demonstrate high levels of performance.
