Meet Kayleigh

Workforce Challenge

Kayleigh applied for TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) and enrolled in JOBS (Job Opportunities and Basic Skills) in September 2009. She was 20 years old and a single mother of one child. She needed assistance with her living expenses while she was working part-time and attending school full-time pursuing a degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Kayleigh also needed assistance with car repairs and child care.

Workforce Solution

The role of the JOBS program is to provide support and guidance to assist customers in achieving self-sufficiency. Heather Hovland, Kayleigh's JOBS counselor, supported and encouraged her to do well in school so she could obtain a good job. Kayleigh provided Heather with verification that she was working and going to school and that both were going well. The met face-to-face on a weekly basis and talked many times on the phone each month. Kayleigh and Heather discussed job applications, interviewing, resumes and job searches. Heather was able to provide Kayleigh with transporation funds, assistance with purchasing nursing scrubs/uniforms, paying for car repairs, and paying for Kayleigh's nursing board exams.

Outcomes & Benefits

Kayleigh graduated from Moorhead State Community and Technical College in July 2010. She took her nursing board exams in August 2010 and passed the first time! She applied for a variety of LPN positions and obtained a full-time position in mid-September 2010. Heather continues to see Kayleigh face-to-face on a monthly basis and have phone conversations with her a few times a month. Heather provides continued support to Kayleigh as she successfully transitions into the world of work.
