Meet Charles

Workforce Challenge

Charles had recently lost his job and was looking for resources to reignite his career. His former supervisor had told him that the state could provide training for displaced workers. Charles' wife had recently completed her college degree, and Charles felt he would greatly benefit by doing the same. Unfortunately when he inquired about training funds at a later date, he received misinformation that caused him to not actually receive training until he was close to the end of his unemployment benefit period.

Workforce Solution

Charles’s long held interest in technology led him to pursue the Cyber Security program at Rose State College. As he has stated numerous times “I have always loved working with computers and wanted to go into that field, but I never seemed to have the time to do it. It had also been close to twenty years since I was last in school, so I didn’t know if I was going to be able to make the grade”.

Given his love of computers and his steadfast dedication to school, Charles was able to secure WIA funding in order to bring his dreams to life. Charles has found his niche and is maintaining a 3.6 GPA. He is also the recipient of a Cyber Security scholarship that has covered much of his training needs. Charles is completing his final semester at Rose State College and will graduate in May with a dual degree in Cyber Security and Database Development.

Outcomes & Benefits

Charles shared with staff that the WIA program was instrumental in helping him to complete his schooling. Between WIA, his scholarship and a Pell Grant, Charles was able to complete his degree while also having time with his family. Charles has found an immense amount of enjoyment in returning to school, as well as learning a new career skill. He is eager to enter the cyber security field in Oklahoma.
