Meet Shailynne

Workforce Challenge

Shailynne was 25 years old, recently married and had just completed A Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology from Oklahoma State University. She had been accepted into the Physician Assistant Program at The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City but struggled with the financial burden it would put on her. Her husband was also in college working on a law degree and they have been living on PELL grants and loans while Shailynne also worked in a temporary job to make ends meet.

Workforce Solution

It was determined that she was eligible to receive help through WIA for some of her tuition and book costs as well as her uniforms and the cost of her Physician Assistant license. Shailynne was an excellent student going to school from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm every day while completing two to three hours of home work each night. Just her first summer classes consisted of Clinical Medicine II, Pharmocotherpautics, Pathoophysiology, and Radiology.

Outcomes & Benefits

Shailynne completed her program with excellent grades and has gone to work at the Neuroscience Institute. She is very grateful for the assistance she was able to receive from the Workforce Investment Act and is looking forward to a successful future in a challenging and high demand occupation.
