Meet Laviana

Workforce Challenge

Laviana enrolled into the WIA Youth Program in the summer of 2009. At the time, she was attending SeeWorth Academy. Not only did Laviana test below a ninth grade level, she was also pregnant and had work experience.

Workforce Solution

Laviana told center staff that she had enrolled in the WIA Youth Program because she wanted to make a better life for her and her child. During her membership in the youth program, Laviana successfully completed a work experience program at Health Start. She increased her reading and math proficiency scores and enrolled in the Platt College Medical Assistant program with the assistance of the WIA Youth Program.

Outcomes & Benefits

In March 2011, Laviana earned her High School Diploma from Platt College’s concurrent enrollment program. Laviana is scheduled to earn her Medical Assistant Certification soon after. With the help of the WIA Youth Program, Laviana is now on the pathway to achieving educational and employment success.
