Meet Seth

Workforce Challenge

After thirteen years of employment, Seth was laid off from his position as a Senior Design Engineer with a large general aviation aircraft manufacturing corporation. Seth was now unemployed and going from a salary of $39.95 per hour to unemployment benefits.

Workforce Solution

In May 2014, Seth received notice from the Kansas Department of Labor that he was eligible for benefits under Trade Adjustment Assistance Petition #83359 and in June attended a TAA Informational Meeting at Wichita Area Technical College. Seth was assigned to a TAA Case Manager and came into the Wichita Workforce Center on 06/04/2014 and met with Toneisha in the Career Center who completed Seth’s Dislocated Worker eligibility and provided a general overview of services available to Seth through the Wichita Workforce Center. Seth met with his TAA Case Manager that same day. The TAA application and enrollment process was completed and the many benefits of TAA were explained to Seth. Though Seth held a B.S. in Aeronautical Technology from Purdue University, he felt that his lack of advanced knowledge in CATIA (Computer Aided Three-dimensional Interactive Application) was a barrier to reemployment. CATIA is a multi-platform CAD/CAM/CAE commercial software suite used in the aviation manufacturing industry and, in particular, in Seth’s trade impacted job as a Design Engineer. Seth was interested in the opportunity for training in the area of CATIA V5 at the Wichita State University CAD/CAM Lab which would provide him with training on the most up to date version of CATIA V5 and the credentials to back up his experience. Seth and his case manager completed and submitted a classroom training request and Seth was approved to start his training on 06/10/2014.

Outcomes & Benefits

Seth began attending TAA approved training and obtained certificates in CATIA V5 Composites on 07/17/2014 and CATIA V5 Sheetmetal on 10/04/2014. Seth received a job offer from Belcan Technical to work as a Design Engineer with a start date of 11/10/2014 at a rate of approximately $50 per hour. Seth notified his TAA Case Manager and in his response to her request for more information about the position, he stated, “It's people like you and a program such as the TAA that encourage those such as myself to enhance our skill sets to become more marketable. I know for a fact that due to the (2) WSU/NIAR classes I took with the TAA I set myself apart from the pool of candidates that I was competing with for the available jobs and landed a great job” and in response to his Case Managers thanks, he responded, “ You're welcome. I believe in programs such as this one; I was fortunately able to qualify for. Everybody needs a helping hand every once in a while.”
