Meet Kenneth

Workforce Challenge

Kenneth was a "Special Disabled" veteran and single father with 3 children. He had been unemployed for over six months and his UI benefits had recently expired. Ken and his three children were on the verge of being evicted. He was behind $2,350 in rent and was referred to the Disabled Veterans Outreach Program for assistance. An initial assessment revealed that although Ken has over 16 years of IT experience, his lack of a Security+ certificate was causing him to be passed over by local employers.

Workforce Solution

Kenneth was enrolled in the Veterans Workforce Investment Program and arrangements were made for him to obtain Security+ training. After receiving certification, Kenneth was hired, but his first paycheck would not arrive in time to satisfy the landlord. The PPWFC DVOP orchestrated a partnership between 4 organizations in just two days to provide rent assistance for Kenneth and his family. Kenneth was immediately enrolled into WIA which provided supportive service assistance of $650. Rocky Mountain Human Services and a local VFW post each provided $500. The remainder was contributed by the PPWFC DMVA Veterans Assistance Grant.

Outcomes & Benefits

Thanks to his certification in Security+, Kenneth is continuing to work as an Information Systems Security Officer and is able to provide for his family. Ken sent center staff a thank you letter recently to express his appreciation for all their help. In it, he said, "It is a huge relief knowing I will be able to keep my house and that I'm finally able to begin providing for myself and my family once again. I sincerely appreciate your efforts.”
