Spanish Peaks Hospital

Workforce Challenge

The Administrator of the Veteran's Nursing Home, Marty Schlink, came to the Walsenburg Workforce Center to discuss a CNA training partnership between the workforce center, the hospital, the VA Nursing Home, Trinidad State Junior College, and Career Training Academy. In addition to workforce center staff, those present included the CEO of Spanish Peaks Regional Medical Center, the Charge Nurse NH, the HR Supervisor, and the Career Training Academy Principal.

Workforce Solution

Walsenburg Workforce Center staff explained the Workforce Investment Act program to those in attendance and the information was well received. The CEO of Spanish Peaks Regional Medical Center determined that the Charge Nurse and another colleague would be the instructors of the 4-week course which would be affiliated with Trinidad State Junior College. The hospital/nursing home would pre-select the participants based on the viability of offering them full-time, permanent employment. The cost to the participant would be about $1,200-$1,300 and the hospital began reviewing options for making up the difference in the amount that the workforce center can fund and the cost borne by the participant. The goal is to enroll four to six participants who have a desire to not only obtain their CNA, but also one day continue on to obtain their RN license.

Outcomes & Benefits

Upon completion of the program, Spanish Peaks will be hiring at $10.41/hr. The hospital CEO expressed an interest in offering 80% tuition reimbursement to students who continue to their RN. Due to their willingness to hire these participants at a locally reasonable wage and the regression model CM wage reduction expectations, this partnership will benefit the local economy, the participant, and the employer and is value-added endeavor.
