Meet Christopher

Workforce Challenge

Chris came to us in June of 2012. He was requesting tuition assistance to complete paramedic training.

Chris was working in retail making $9.00 hr and he was volunteering at two different places as an EMT-B. He had about three years of work experience and he wanted to move up in his career. Even with his work in retail and as an EMT, he had been unable to afford the training necessary to advance his career, and there was no financial aid available for this training.

Workforce Solution

Chris got approved for a WIA scholarship which enabled him to pay for his training. He started training in July of 2012. The paramedic training consists of two semesters of classroom and a third semester internship which consists of 500 hrs of field work. The completion of these hours depends on availability and because Chris had a hard time securing hours in the first two months after completing his classroom training, he failed his internship semester. Chris discussed his situation with his Case Manager and the school staff. The school agreed to let him retake the whole program without having to re-pay. Chris' Case Manager kept his file open, and kept an open line of communication with him to offer encouragement and support.

Outcomes & Benefits

Chris’ persistence paid off, and he successfully completed his training in August 2014, and got a full time job in October 2014 with Rural Metro as paramedic making $38,000.
