Meet Larry

Workforce Challenge

Larry was an Army veteran who was having trouble finding gainful employment and did not have the money to pay for training.

Workforce Solution

In June 2013, Cortez Workforce Center (WFC) staff enrolled Larry in the CEATP program to attend San Juan College for gas compression. WIA was not able to help with the tuition, however staff was able to enroll him into the VWIP program for the additional support. WFC staff wrote a letter of recommendation to the school as there is limited enrollment space for the gas compression course. Larry scored high enough on the Accuplacer test and he was one of the 12 students selected for the class.

Outcomes & Benefits

Larry successfully completed the classes and was able to do his internship with BP. Larry was offered a job in Texas with Chevron starting at $28.00/hour. He received a sign on bonus and $1800 for moving expenses. He stated he could not have obtained this job without the assistance of the WFC staff. He started his new job in January 2015 and is grateful to the WFC staff for all our help.
